New Brighton, MN – January 2025 – Verterra Energy Inc is proud to announce its selection by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) to receive testing support through the Hydropower Testing Network (HyTN). This initiative connects hydropower technology developers with U.S.-based test facilities to advance the readiness of innovative hydropower technologies.
As one of 12 selected developers, Verterra Energy will collaborate with a designated HyTN test facility, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL), to study fish interactions in shallow water with its modular hydropower systems. This collaboration highlights Verterra’s commitment to advancing environmentally sustainable hydropower solutions. Together with PNNL, Verterra will contribute to innovative research and testing aimed at improving fish passage technologies critical to ecological balance and compliance in hydropower systems.
"We are thrilled to be part of this program and look forward to contributing to the evolution of hydropower technology," said Ted Christopher, CEO of Verterra Energy Inc. "This collaboration will enable us to accelerate the development and deployment of our innovative solutions, supporting the nation's operational energy and security goals."

Verterra is on a mission to harness the power of flowing water in rivers, oceans and canals to produce abundant, reliable power.

Volturnus is a vertical axis turbine that uniquely harnesses the power of flowing water by combining the working principles of centrifugal pumps & hydrofoils with a rugged, hydrodynamic design. Similar to an underwater 3D weather vane, VOLTURNUS works in harmony with the current to dynamically adjust once deployed. When installed in modular arrays, the technology creates scalable, continuous power from small, 100 watt backpack scale, up to multi-MW arrays.
Based in Minnesota, Verterra is funded by mission driven investors and a multi-year DoD contract to commercialize the technology for multiple applications.
