About the Role

Verterra Energy is seeking a Civil Engineer who will be responsible for the development of anchoring, foundation, and mooring solutions for Volturnus in streams, rivers, and oceans. This engineer will be responsible for developing and advancing structures, devices, and deployment/retrieval methods, both unique and novel as well as conventional, which will enable Verterra Energy to install individual and multiple Volturnus devices and supporting infrastructure at a given site.

The ideal candidate will have a curious and thoughtful mind with a passion for engineering and a will thrive in a dynamic technology development environment with the ability to quickly adapt to evolving timelines and objectives. A strong applicant will have a mix of managerial and hands-on experience and will understand how to plan and execute project tasks.

We are looking for individuals who can hit-the-ground-running and execute on their own as well as helping to build out the civil team over the coming years.

Requirements

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Identify and oversee in-field site characterization efforts and test methodologies for stream, river and seabed assessment. 

  • Coordinate with environmental compliance interests from pre-install, through operation and post remediation phases. 

  • Advance foundation solutions from concept through detailed design and oversee their fabrication and installation. 

  • Collaborate with control and instrumentation engineering for site monitoring, installation and operational observation. 

  • Develop plans for installation and removal for foundation, anchoring or mooring systems including any cabling and ancillary system components.  

  • Prepare data and documentation for permitting requirements. Ability to learn about and apply an understanding of any local, regional, state and federal agency standards, statutes and guidelines. 

  • Coordinate with vendors, suppliers and service providers.  

  • Prior experience in geotechnical engineering within the oil & gas or offshore renewable industries will be given preferential consideration.

Professional Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Engineering Geology, or related field, from an accredited university. 

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in civil engineering or geotechnical engineering. 

  • Prior experience in soil investigation, soil mechanics and foundation engineering with an understanding of the methods used to collect supporting engineering data. 

  • Civil/Arch. AutoCAD design applications with 2D drafting experience. 

  • Experience with foundation design methods using existing standards or relying on first-principles to develop new and novel solutions. 

  • Able to lift 50 lbs. 

  • Able to reliably work 5 days a week. 

  • Authorized to work in the U.S. 

This position will work primarily from the Verterra Energy, Inc headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota.

This is a hands-on position, so the candidate will be equally at ease in the field, machine shop or behind a desk working virtually or directly with hardware and instruments. Fabrication, prototyping and testing will be routine activities.

Specific Skills and Needs
  • Deliver clear and concise communication, both written and verbal, to management, other team members and end users.

  • Conceive, develop, implement, and evaluate power system components with an emphasis on safety and DFx principles.

  • 3D solid modeling (Solidworks) and 2D drafting experience.

  • Experience using mathematics software such as Matlab, Labview or MathCAD, or a willingness to learn.

  • Create and maintain production prints, assembly instructions, bills of material, and other documentation related to developed products.

  • Initiate and/or contribute to engineering changes and corrective and preventive actions.

  • Communicate with team members the end users of designs to gather feedback, provide technical support and troubleshoot problems.

  • Generate procedural support documents and user manuals for developed products.

  • Create verification plans for component and system designs.
